Toirano caves

Marvel at one of the most suggestive cave complexes in Europe...

The Cave of the Witch

Rich in history and folklore, the little town offers the visitor a very interesting museum, the Museum of Rural Life and Traditions, where many ancient tools are on show, including the equipment for the complete oil making process.

The main attraction however is the Cave of the Witch, not far from the village. It is a huge complex of caves, classified as one of the most interesting in Europe both for their scientific value and extraordinary beauty. Scientists found evidence of human life in the caves dating back to the Neanderthal age of (40.000 B.C.)

Another dweller to have left its tracks was “Ursus Speleus”, a bear that lived in the caves in prehistorical times. Wonderfully transparent stalactites and stalagmites are a fairy-tale setting for ballet shows in summer.
